2010

Williamstown Festival Contemporary Art Prize

The Substation hosted the 2010 Williamstown Festival Contemporary Art Prize from 4 – 28 March. 

The Williamstown Festival Contemporary Art Prize is an annual event which continues to grow in reputation as a significant exhibition that broadly showcases the diversity and excellence of contemporary Australian art practice.  The exhibition is a major component of the Williamstown Festival and this year it showcases over 100 Australian and international artists.

Judged by Jane Scott, Director of TarraWarra Museum of Art, there is over $15,000 in non acquisitive prizes available, including the $10,000 Major award supported by djprojects. Curated by Julie Collins.

The launch and announcement of prize recipients for the 2010 exhibition was held on Thursday 4 March, 6.30pm.


2009

VCE Exhibition

Fri 20 Nov – Sun 6 Dec

The VCE exhibition was held for the eighth year. It showcased the work of talented, local Year 12 students from Bayside Secondary College, Williamstown High School, Werribee Secondary College, Westbourne Grammar School, Thomas Carr College,  Brimbank Secondary College, St Columba's College, Ave Maria, Emmanuel College and Footscray City College.

Opening night wass Thurs 19 November. Local artist Anne Scambary officially opened the exhibition.

The exhibition will be open to the public Fri 20 Nov – Sun 6 Dec:
Fri 4-7pm, Sat & Sun 11am-4pm.

Local Artists Exhibition

An exciting exhibition of mixed media work created by local artists including the Maribyrnong River Edge Art Movement (MREAM) Collective. MREAM Halloween - the sleep of MREAM produces monsters.

A4 @ The Substation celebrates local artists with disabilities. The exhibition provides opportunities for local artists to create a presence through artistic expression. Experience a unique, vibrant and fascinating exhibition of mixed media artwork.

A4 @ The Substation is a community arts project initiated by The Substation in partnership with Hobsons Bay City Council's Metro Access project, annecto - the people network, Alpha Autism, Gellibrand Support Services, Yarraville Special Development School and Mambourin Enterprises.

SUB12 | 10 July to 27 September 2009

SUB12 is a new exhibition program that provides opportunity for emerging and established visual artists working across a diverse platform to exhibit in one of Melbourne’s most inspiring new art spaces.

The SUB12 exhibition program in 2009 ran for a 12 week period from 10 July through to 27 September.

There were 34 exhibitions in total with some being arts collectives or group shows, while others are solo exhibitions.

SUB12 was presented by Hobsons Bay City Council (HBCC) in partnership with The Substation.

Members of the Hobsons Bay Arts Society displayed works in various mediums and styles in the gallery space of the Substation.

ArtCRAFT 2009

The third ArtCraft - ArtCRAFT 2009 was held over two weekends 2-10 May.

If you explore your creative side by quilting, woodwork, ceramics, pottery, painting, lead lighting, photography, jewellery making, to name but a few, then this exhibition is for you. This is an event for the hobby enthusiast - strictly no professionals please!

ArtCRAFT is an opportunity for you to put your talents on display to the community at The Substation in a non-competitive environment. The only judging was a People's Choice Award.

Flybys by Giovanna Inserra

'Flybys' by Giovanna Inserra - a temporary work of light projection art - was shown on the eastern side of The Substation on 17 and 18 April.

Flybys delivered a light-arted outdoor light projection that illuminated the facade of the Substation dazzling voyeurs, with gigantic zippers to reveal a humanistic element of the body within architecture.

Flybys was presented by Hobsons Bay Art in Public Places program.

Williamstown Festival Contemporary Art Prize

The Williamstown Festival Contemporary Art Prize attracted entries from all over Australia. Artists were short listed to exhibit in this nationally renowned award by a judging panel consisting of some of Australia’s leading art professionals. The exhibition showcased excellence in the visual arts to a local and broader audience. A broad cross section of contemporary art practice was sought for representation in the exhibition. This included: painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, digital and mixed media.

Winners announced: Painter Dagmar Cyrulla has taken out the $3000 major prize. She was one of 106 artists short-listed to exhibit from a record number of entries received from across Australia. The launch and awards ceremony was held at The Substation on 20 March with a crowd of over 400 people in attendance. 


2008

Photography Studies College: Strange New Quarry

An exhibition of photographic works by the graduating Photography Studies College Art Major Students, curated by Carolyn Lewens.

VCE Art Exhibition

In it’s eighth year, the VCE Art Exhibition featured work from Western Region Schools, including: Bayside Secondary College, Werribee Secondary College, Westbourne Grammar School, Williamstown High School, St Columbus College and Ave Maria College.

Another very successful Year 12 student exhibition was held at The Substation from 20-23 November. Amongst the eight schools participating were two newcomers - Brimbank and Kuranjang  Secondary Colleges.

Opening night was well attended and buzzing with excitement.

Anuradha Patel, public artist and sculptor, opened the exhibition with an encouraging and inspirational speech, in which she told of her journey in becoming an artist, and of the opportunities that lie ahead for the young artists represented. Anuradha’s most recent work is the “Whirl Pool”, a steel sculpture situated at The Warmies in Newport.

Bayside Secondary College generously catered for the opening night and Laverton Secondary College music teacher, Steve Colbrook and two VCE students provided pleasant background music with saxophone, keyboard and vocals.
